How to Get Started with Decluttering

We don't all live in show homes and it's completely normal to have "stuff" lying around the house, but at what point does it become a problem? Unfortunately, clutter can quickly become overwhelming. It is no secret that our home environment plays a huge part on our inner mental, emotional and even physical state. Clutter chaos often manifests itself on any positive energy we have and can leave us feeling like life itself is out of control.

But, first, what is classed as clutter?

Clutter can come in all different shapes and sizes and is often defined as anything that doesn't add any value to your life or home. A few examples are as follows:

  • Books you've never read and/or will never read again (including that copy of The Great Gatsby...)

  • Clothes that you no longer wear or fit into

  • Tarnished jewellery

  • Old DVDs (even though you don't have a DVD player anymore!)

As a professional decluttering and organisation company, we know the importance of sorting through the items in your home. So, to get you inspired and focused on the task at hand, our experts have put together a guide on how to get started.

Visualise your goal

Before pulling every possession out of every cupboard, think about what you want to achieve with each room you'll be tackling. Do you want a calmer feel for your living room space? Perhaps you don't want to be hunting for those pesky tupperware lids in your kitchen? No matter what you're up against, try to envision what each room would ideally look like, and, just as importantly, how you want to feel in each space of your home.

Change your mindset

As with most things in life, you have to be in the right frame of mind. You can't jump into it worrying about the things you are parting with. This is why we often suggest staying focused on what you want to keep, rather than what you're getting rid of. It makes the whole process a lot easier and much less daunting. Enlisting the help of a friend is a great way of keeping you on track and making the whole process more enjoyable too!

Schedule the time into your diary

It is crucial to be realistic as to what you can achieve in the time you have available. If you find the process intimidating, just tackle the mantlepiece or take a single drawer at a time. If you did want to get it all done in one go, think about investing in general decluttering services for that extra pair of hands! At WeDeclutter, we also offer services related to moving home, downsizing, and wardrobe organisation.

Don't replace your clutter with new clutter!

It can be extremely tempting to replace items you're throwing out and immediately start shopping again! Never buy in haste! Wait until after the decluttering process is finished before even thinking about buying more.

Start small and make your way up

Starting off in a smaller, less "sentimental" room is often advisable. Often crammed with hotel toiletries and sample bottles - which you're less likely to be attached to and are rarely used - bathrooms are a great place to get going with your decluttering. It will also prove to be a quicker and less complex job than your wardrobe or bedroom space.
